There are all these small, parent-hostile aspects of how schools work no school the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, no aftercare the Tuesday before Thanksgiving that were invisible to me before I had a kid.

Ryan S. Casey@roscone523 hours ago

Maybe we should fix the economy and make it possible to raise a family on only one parent working one job.

NYC Angry Mom@angrybklynmom21 hours ago

No, this is not the answer. Both parents should be able to have a meaningful career and a family. The answer is for public services to adjust to the needs of the public, not the other way around.

Miranda Kate @PurpleQueenNL19? minutes ago

But it would be nice if they had the choice. Currently they do not have a choice. Everyone has to work if they want to have a mortgage and kids. I would like not to be expected to have a 'meaningful career' & be valued as a full-time mum.

Sounds way more realistic than changing school and daycare calendars a bit!

It's cool how every neoliberal solution is to create an ever expanding underclass of servants and service workers to prop up the idealized existence of a shrinking professional class.

Have women leave the workforce, the market would sort it out. The upper left square of the prisoner's dilemma. Currently we're in the bottom right.

I had no idea schools were also babysitting services.

Jeff@20thgrader23 hours ago

So where is this magical babysitter that I can pay to work 2 hours a day and around every holiday? My boss sure doesn't care. Maybe you do?

Danette Unplugged@danettunplugged2 hours ago

No, we dont care. This is a flaw of your jobs not being family friendly and not the responsibility of schools.

Jeff@20thgrader2 hours ago

You don't care about airline pilots? What if I was a surgeon, still don't care? You don't think it is good policy to have some sort of safe place for kids that can't go home to their parents care at 2:45 pm every day? Wouldn't schools make sense for that or just the algebra?

Danette Unplugged@danettunplugged1 hour ago

Sure but it isnt the schools responsibly to provide it. Instead of bitching about schools, put the blame where it belongs

Peter Waltman@PeterWaltman39? minutes ago

Also, it's not just schools. Most of the daycares - at least those in the town I Iive in - are closed today too.

Peter Waltman@PeterWaltman42? minutes ago

I have a coworker who's Italian, and he said that this setup is unique to the US, where there are holidays that only kids get. I get that you don't care, but I believe that Matt's original comment is simply that this setup is hidden unless you have kids

Unions seem better at negotiating for benefits than pay. And when a teacher's union negotiates for days off that doesnt cost the city more like higher pay. The cost is born by parents who already pay exorbitant property taxes bc their house is valued way too high cuz supply prob

EILUJB@Va2021J22? hours ago

Maybe we should just pay teachers like babysitters and be done with it; Avg rate of babysitters in US: $17 / hour Avg # of kids in class: 25 6 hours per day (not counting time teachers spend working outside of the classroom) 180 days a year 17 x 25 x 6 x 180 = $459,000

Are School Masks Gone Yet? #MaskLikeAKid@Fights_For_Kids21 hours ago

This is stupid. One babysitter give one child one on one individualized care. One teacher does not care for 25 children like that.

Gobble Gobble @Disco_Meatball2 hours ago

True it should probably pay more to watch more children as its a more specialized and difficult position

 Otto-Roasted Turkey @Matic82Otto1? hour ago

Not to mention teachers are doing more than just watching the children and keeping them from harm. They're imparting knowledge and molding these kids into functional members of society.

Are School Masks Gone Yet? #MaskLikeAKid@Fights_For_Kids1 hour ago

Its not that I don't believe teachers are entitled to good wages, but the comparison between teachers and babysitters must stop. Its two different things, although public school does perform a childcare function in that parents rely on it to be open when it says it is.

Are School Masks Gone Yet? #MaskLikeAKid@Fights_For_Kids1 hour ago

Our society is set up for parents to rely on public school as partial childcare function, and in turn relied on it to be there for those hours so they could work. It has been set up like that for a very long time, and it was never even questioned prior to the pandemic.

THE HORSE WIZARD@thehorsewizard1 minute ago

Shut the fuck you dont teach you dont know what you are talking about

Allison Clough@jacnumbers1 hour ago

Yeah, but babysitters dont get paid that way for multiple kids. If a nanny makes $17/hr for 1 baby, she makes *maybe* $5 more for 2. And teens hired to watch big groups of elementary-aged kids at parties, in the summer, etc., make $20/hr at most. No benefits

www.vaccines.gov Booster Shots Easy@JeremyM720148401? hour ago

Yeah about 10 years ago my wife was getting only 12 an hour to watch 3 kids ages 4-12. They were really well behaved though and she got paid while they were sleeping.

The problem of wealth. It costs money to have it!

Egalitarian@forEgality2 hours ago

Problem

www.vaccines.gov Booster Shots Easy@JeremyM720148401? hour ago

The problem is I'm paying over double in property taxes for the same house ive been living in for 8 years. The value going up is meaningless when I have to live here. We need massively more housing instead of the mess of what we have now.

www.vaccines.gov Booster Shots Easy@JeremyM720148401? hour ago

If I sell Id have to buy something that's also overvalued or my son would lose all his friends bc we moved to the middle of nowhere.

www.vaccines.gov Booster Shots Easy@JeremyM720148401? hour ago

The people obsessed with their on paper property values are short sighted fools who don't realize we'd all benefit from more housing. Only people renting out get a worthwhile gain from run away housing values.

www.vaccines.gov Booster Shots Easy@JeremyM720148401? hour ago

I mean if your very specific neighborhood explodes in value that's one thing, but this price explosion is everywhere in the metro area I live in.

Egalitarian@forEgality2 hours ago

Its an easy problem to solve, if it was actually a problem.

Boards of Ed make calendars

Luke Murphy@likemurphy11 hour ago

I can't speak for everywhere, but where I teach, the state mandates the number of instructional days and the school board / CEO come up with the calendar. There is 0 union negotiation for days off. People need to stop blaming the union for dumb board decisions

M K. Eesl@mkees121 hours ago

The school calendar has been available to you for at least three months. Talk to other parents. Chip in on an outing one parent can take a few kids. Other parents foot the bill for snacks and games for all the kids. Viola.

Erika Ross, MA | Editor@er_selavy1 hour ago

"Just get your family/community to help out with the kids" is equivalent to "just use your inheritance to buy [upper/middle class thing]."
